For me, high school wasn’t hard. I didn’t get bullied and I was never a part of drama. I went through hard moments but not an overall hard experience. Knowing the background of how I grew up, I had it well compared to a lot of the kids who went to my high school. I acknowledge that not everyone has the same experiences and it is mind opening to read about other people’s experience to get a better perspective of the world around me. In Roxane Gay’s post, it is inspiring to see that even though she was bullied for her physical appearance and her ideas, she was able to keep her head high and stay motivated for what she wanted. When she later understands that some dreams are harder to achieve than others; however, it doesn’t seem to stop her. Motivation from the Sweet Valley Books that she constantly read, pushed her to fight for what she knew and how she wanted to be. I’ve never truly understood what it is like to be somewhere and everyone around look different (and them pointing out the differences), but reading Roxane Gay’s story has opened my eyes to a new perspective and I’m grateful to have learned about it.
