When reading chapter one, I didn’t realize how much genre is used in everyday thought. I used to think books and media were the only topics that defined their categories as genres. Choices we make when we put something into action can be considered a genre. An example of that was used in this chapter when the book talked about making an advertisement. Understanding what interests audience’s attention is how we decide to showcase an announcement. Marketing campaigns target their audience based on what will attract them to the product the most. Pathos, Logos, and Ethos can all be considered genres in advertising. A lot of the topics that are discussed in chapter one can be connected to the business world. When Rhetoric is discussed, they use the example of writing a review on a restaurant. A rhetorical situation being a statement that you want to get to your readers. People want to know what you have to say and it is your job to say it to them through detail and anecdotes. I would’ve never known to connect things that you learn in English to business. I am a business major and this will help me find some interest to this class.
