In chapter 5 of The Bedford Book of Genres, there is a basic run through of choosing the best topic for your research paper. The chapter takes you step by step, the first step being brainstorming. By talking to different people, making lists, mind mapping, or freewriting, it will help come up the best topic for you as a writer to decide what to write about. Once you have found the topic to write about, start asking basic questions to make sure everything is answered. Make sure your topic is narrowed down enough that the whole paper is focused on one specific subject. By the end of your first draft, you should have a general thesis to base what you’re going to be writing about. I thought this chapter was very helpful for me because I was struggling writing out what specifically I wanted to say in my research paper. This chapter broke down all the steps I needed to follow to make sure I said everything I wanted to in my first draft of the research paper. I don’t enjoy writing research papers or writing in general but reading the chapters from our text book take the main struggle out of having to write these papers.
